The dream of work-life balance has exhausted and frustrated a generation of conscientious parents with demanding careers. Balance requires splitting, segregating, and compartmentalizing ourselves into competing domains in the vain hope of protecting each aspect of ourselves from our other interests. Chasing balance is an unwinnable game, like trying to out-run a treadmill. Integration is a more satisfying choice.
